Australia's Surfing History

Surfing has become one of the most popular water sports, and Australia contains some of the best surfing spots in the world,  Australia also produces some of the best surfing champions in the world, such as five time world champ Stephanie Gilmore and three time world champ Mick Fanning.

Surfing isn’t just a fad that has recently started, it’s actually been in the Australian culture since the 1990’s when the legendary Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku, brought surfing to Australia, Duke visited multiple countries and gave surfing demonstrations. Duke’s demonstration in Australia was Sydney and that how surfing Down Under began. Yet it is thought that Captain James Cook first observed this pastime in the early 1770’s. In the early sixties, surfing was then introduced to Europe by Australian Lifeguards.
